However, even though Redfall’s co-op mode and creative combat look enticing, there are some things that a few fans wished were included as well. Despite the option to choose between four playable characters with unique skillsets and access to customizable weapons, the limit to character customization means that players aren’t in full control. Of course, there are benefits as well as downsides to Redfall’s current setup, but pushing the customization options further might have made Arkane Studios’ next offering a stronger game.

Redfall’s Character Customization

Set in a fictional island town in Massachusetts, Redfall lets players explore a once idyllic community that has since fallen under the thrall of some scientifically engineered vampires and their human followers. After the town descends into chaos and is shut off from the outside world, gamers are tasked with wiping out the vampiric horde and taking back control. They can choose to play as one of four different characters and either work with friends or complete the game solo, although it definitely seems as if Redfall is geared toward a co-op experience.

The characters that gamers can choose have set personalities, backgrounds, and styles, although players are able to customize their builds and weaponry as the game progresses. Weapons and other loot can be acquired as Redfall’s open world is explored, but each one will have traits better suited to certain characters. Players can choose between Cryptozoologist and trap aficionado Devinder, telekinetic Layla, combat engineer Remi, or ex-military sharpshooter Jacob, and although they will have some say in how they approach encounters, each character is already set up for a certain type of playstyle based on their class.

Why Redfall Could Have Pushed This Further

While the four playable characters’ traits and talents each bring something different to the table in Redfall and allow for a truly diverse team build, gamers aren’t able to take more of the character customization into their own hands. Character creation is usually a popular element, and even if fans can’t influence the way their character looks, being able to fully customize their class, in addition to their passive and active abilities, is always a cool feature. It also allows for greater replayability, as players can experience the game multiple times in many different ways with a more unique character.

Redfall won’t even allow players to respec their characters once the game has started or swap out to try a different team member, which could have been a useful way to ensure some flexibility when it comes to combat. Players experiencing Redfall solo are also locked into a certain type of playstyle, like if they opt for Jacob and are channeled into using long-range weapons and a stealth approach. If Redfall allowed players to customize the characters to a greater extent, they could have mixed and matched different talents to ensure that individual characters were more effective, rather than relying on the versatility of a full team.

Redfall will launch for PC and Xbox Series X/S on May 2, 2023.
