Jones later struck out against Sox starter Chris Sale.
Earlier Tuesday, Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts took to Twitter to encourage Red Sox fans to give Jones the ovation in a show of support.
Jones said that Boston has a long history of incidents like the one he encountered.
Tuesday’s ovation was a nice moment, but as soon as that was over, there was return to normalcy in the Red Sox-Orioles rivalry — Sale threw behind O’s third baseman Manny Machado on the first pitch after fanning Jones. The umpiring crew issued warnings to both teams.
UPDATE: Machado got revenge on Sale and the Sox later in the game, hitting a towering moon shot — and taking his time rounding the bases.

UPDATE 2: Machado unloaded a profanity-laced tirade (we counted 12 F-bombs) after the game. Sale shrugged.
