The Yankees have been the toughest team to beat amid an eight-game winning streak over the last three weeks.
New York had won 17 of 18 games, which is the best stretch for the club since 1953, but the Red Sox recovered from surrendering a four-run lead in the seventh inning to trump the Yankees.
Boston overcame a bullpen meltdown as J.D. Martinez smacked a solo home run in the top of the eighth to retake the lead and avoid a three-game series sweep.
The Yankees were down 4-0 in the seventh, but scored four runs off Heath Hembree and Joe Kelly to tie the game.
It looked like the Yankees were going to pull off another improbable victory, but Martinez put an end to that idea.
Craig Kimbrel then closed out the game with his 10th save of the season.

Freddie Freeman tallied his first five-hit game, going a perfect five for five with a home run and two RBIs in the Atlanta Braves’ 9-2 win over the Miami Marlins.
Phillies starting pitcher Vince Velasquez struck out 12 in six innings as Philadelphia beat the San Francisco Giants 6-3.
Baltimore Orioles outfielders Trey Mancini and Adam Jones each went three for five with a double and a homer in an 11-6 victory against the Kansas City Royals.

The Rockies and Brewers are expected to compete for playoff spots this season and Chad Bettis (4-1, 2.05 ERA) will need to be a huge part of that if Colorado hope to make a run.
