RPCS3 also provided a brief summary of its progress in the description provided with the video:

All of that is to say the improvements made in emulating Red Dead Redemption are entirely due to direct improvements made to the emulator itself. This isn’t a mod where the developers are trying to fix Red Dead Redemption itself, but rather just issues emulating the PlayStation 3 on PC. The hardware is very different and it’s going to take a lot of time to get it right. And even then, the PC hardware necessary to emulate PlayStation 3 games may be beyond what the average enthusiast PC can put out.

Red Dead Redemption just happens to be the perfect example for RPCS3’s recent progress, but other games than Red Dead Redemption are running much better on PC. For example, Demon’s Souls was shown running on the emulator back in March. Since then, huge improvements have been made with games like Ni no Kuni, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm, and Soul Calibur 4.

Red Dead Redemption emulation for PlayStation 3 shouldn’t be confused with the recent controversy regarding Red Dead Redemption being modded into Grand Theft Auto 5. For background, a modding group decided to try and mod Red Dead Redemption’s assets into the PC version of Grand Theft Auto 5, but the project was shut down by publisher Take Two two months ago.

Rockstar and Take-Two continued to target Grand Theft Auto 5 modders, though were forced to backtrack after temporarily shutting down one of the game’s most popular single-player mods. The community backlash was enough to get Rockstar and Take Two to rescind their cease and desist, but their efforts continue. As recently as this past week, several emulation sites have had to pull down rom and ISO downloads of Rockstar games.

It’s enough evidence to suspect that RPCS3 could be targeted in some way, considering the devs are advertising Red Dead Redemption emulation so openly. It would be a leap for Take Two to get the project shut down, as RPCS3 does not support piracy through its project. Nevertheless, Take Two is being very aggressive towards projects bringing about Red Dead Redemption on PC.

Red Dead Redemption is available now on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, as well as on Xbox One via Backwards Compatibility.
