The main focus of the application will be an off-screen map, allowing gamers to quickly pan and zoom around locations with their mobile device’s touchscreen. The map will be interactive, allowing for players to set waypoints and mark areas of interest as they explore the landscape. The ability to have a functional off-screen map also means that gamers looking for an immersive experience can turn off the HUD of Red Dead Redemption 2 entirely, basking in the glory of the untamed west on their television sets. The application will release alongside the game itself on October 26, 2018 for iOS and Android.

Beyond being a functional real-time map and waypoint system, the Red Dead Redemption 2 mobile application will also function as a digital replica of Arthur’s journal, allowing gamers to delve deeper into the life and thoughts of Arthur Morgan. It’s unclear if gamers will be able to browse the journal in-game, though it’s hard to beat a phone or tablet when it comes to a digital page-flipping experience.

The application will also display Arthur’s real-time statistics along with a full game manual. Gamers will also have the option of purchasing a digital copy of the Red Dead Redemption 2 official guide from Piggyback, though the cost of the digital guide itself hasn’t been confirmed as of yet. What’s more, Rockstar Games says more content will be available for the mobile app, though it’s unclear if this additional content will be free of charge or at-cost like the optional guide.

In any event, Rockstar Games is offering up a mighty big slate of content for Red Dead Redemption 2. It’s not clear how much space the tie-in mobile application will take up on iOS or Android, but gamers can probably rest assured it’ll be less than the day one patch for the game itself.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is set to release on October 26, 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
