YouTuber edepot has the full guide on how to hunt down the lone mysterious shark in Red Dead Redemption 2. In their video edepot provides a detailed tour leading to the shark. For specific locations and methods, check out their video, because text descriptions leave a lot to the imagination.

Step 1: Escape the Map

Step one requires the player to escape the map of Red Dead Redemption 2, exploiting a camping bug that puts the player out of bounds. From the road south of Barrow Lagoon, head west. At the fork take a right (north) and ride until what looks to be a snowy path into the mountains is on your right. Camp just off the road on the northeastern side. If the camp is in the correct spot, the player will be moved further north into an open area that’s technically outside of the map.

Step 2: Escape the Snipers

Now the player has to go even further out of bounds to avoid the “invisible snipers” that kill players to prevent them from going outside of the map. Place a marker to the west of the “M” in “Ambarino” and ride north up the mountain, then east until there’s a path down the northern slope. Now ignore the marker and go northeast through the deep snow above Tempest Rim until completely out of the borders shown on the map. Keep as much distance as possible between you and the border, even going to the edge of the untextured map area to avoid the deadly snipers that will reset your effort.

Step 3: Travel to Guarma

This step is unintuitive, but stick with it. Stay far out of the bounds of the map and go counterclockwise all the way around past the Sea of Coronado and the southern tail of the San Luis River. Once south past the visible part of the San Luis River, but not in Mexico, go east along the mountains. Once you’re south of Flat Iron Lake, start checking if your map suddenly turns into the Guarma map. From here, go north while maintaining the Guarma map until reaching the river’s shore. Once along the shore and still inside the Guarma map, drink enough alcohol to pass out. You’ll drop through the world and then spawn in Guarma without any invisible snipers.

Step 4: Hunt the Shark

From Guarma there are two paths to finding the shark:

Go to the beach along the southeastern side of the island. Go into the water and follow the cliff’s wall, taking care not to drown. Standing right up against the cliff will let you stand to regain breath and stamina. After reaching a gently sloping hill with odd looking trees, go south all the way until the textures end. Follow this edge west and drop down once it’s safe and the water is near. Swim into the water a bit and the shark should spawn. It’ll die if it touches land, which it will probably do unintentionally. Go south over land up into and over the mountains all the way to the untextured part of the map. Drop down and then travel west, staying close to the edge. There will be some broken geometry to walk through, but don’t worry about it so long as you know where the edge is. Go all the way to the shore. The shark will not have spawned yet due to the odd routing. Swim west until you start climbing invisible land and the shark should spawn, though it may already be dead.

Players should absolutely fill up their inventories before trying to complete this crazy Easter Egg, and having access to some cheats always helps. Mostly though, those trying to find the shark in Red Dead Redemption 2 should set aside plenty of time for potential mistakes. This shark doesn’t make take it easy on players.

Some have questioned whether the existence of the shark in Red Dead Redemption 2 constitutes a true Easter Egg. After all, players are expected to break the game in a handful of ways that Rockstar likely never intended. Nevertheless, the fact that a single shark remains in the game at all, and that it spawns while the game is in such a broken state, insinuates that it was meant to be found by players eventually. Perhaps the developers simply didn’t care how players found it.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PS4 and Xbox One.
