Set in the year 1899, RDR 2 is the sequel to the highly-successful Red Dead Redemption but is a prequel in terms of the storyline. This year’s game is even more expansive, as the playable area in Red Dead Redemption 2 is larger than the entire map of Grand Theft Auto V. Furthermore, with over 1000 non-playable characters, the game pushes everyone’s imaginations to the limits and is a game every passionate gamer must experience at least once.

Rockstar Games announced Red Dead Online, which is a competitive multiplayer mode set in the RDR 2 universe and is already made available to a select batch of players. This mode features the same map used in RDR 2 and includes a host of features to keep you occupied in the wild west.

Without further ado, let us look closer at the four things you need to know before you get your hands on Red Dead Redemption Online.

#1 Character Creation and the Posse System

The online multiplayer mode begins with the creation of the character. One could set the appearance and attributes with great detail before one sets out on the epic journey from the Sisika Penitentiary.

All the actions that you perform in the game accumulate XP, which improves the player rank and also provides interesting added bonuses. In this process, one unlocks additional items along with improving their attributes. Moreover, the ability system received an overhaul, which now allows players to purchase additional cards using Gold or by increasing their XP.

One could ride with friends in a Posse to complete cooperative story-based missions and head-to-head competitive series. And, depending on the situation in the game, the Posse could either be set as temporary or permanent.

#2 Hidden Missions

After the character creation section, the game constantly tracks the player’s interaction by rewarding them with a brand-new honour system. Player’s honour shifts high or low based on their in-game decisions and behaviour.

Based on this honour system, certain missions will reveal themselves at different areas of the map for a more immersive experience. According to Rockstar Games, these include:

Free Roam Missions

Head over to the Stranger icons throughout the map alone or with your Posse to embark on Free Roam Missions. You’ll see some familiar faces along the way, and these missions can vary based on how noble or nefarious you are – for example, an honourable gunslinger may be asked to help escort a convoy, defending it from attacking gangs or even other players’ Posses, whereas a dishonourable outlaw may be asked to help spring a felon from the law.

A Land of Opportunities

Honour also plays into this deeper cooperative strand for two to four players that we will continually build upon. In A Land of Opportunities, you’ll be faced with a multi-part series of missions, with some parts changing as your honour changes on a larger journey to seek truth and justice, or revenge.

#3 Competitive Modes

With a massive map that spans over five states, it is only natural for the company behind the franchise to introduce a competitive multiplayer mode. Currently, the beta includes five modes that one could enter, which are all part of a larger Showdown Series.

The official description of these modes according to Rockstar Games:

Shootout & Team Shootout

Classic gunfight modes with unlimited lives. Compete to rack up the most kills before the timer runs out. Sudden death will trigger in the event of a tie: whoever gets the first kill wins.

Make it Count

A true test of resourcefulness in two game modes: use nothing but a bow and a handful of arrows or throwing knives to be the last one standing. With a gradually shrinking player area, there’s nowhere to run.

Most Wanted

A tactical race to the top. Every kill pushes you up the scoreboard, but watch out: the closer to the top you are, the more points everyone else gets for killing you.

Hostile Territory

Work in teams to control the land. Capture a territory to start racking up points: the team with most points wins - or you can win outright by capturing every territory.

Name your Weapon

Demonstrate your personal specialty in this free-for-all or team-based match: the trickier the weapon you use to land the killing blow, the more points you get.

#4 Staggered Launch

The Red Dead Online is initially launched to a select batch of players before making it available to the entire RDR 2 community, which is decided by the game edition owned by the enthusiastic fans.

The staggered launch for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will first cover all the owners of the Ultimate Edition of the game, prior to its global launch.
