YouTube channel Red Dead Guides claims to have datamined the details regarding zombies coming to Red Dead Online. Just saying that zombies are being added to the game might be a gross understatement, too. Red Dead Guides says that it’s found “almost 50 zombie models” in Red Dead Online’s files. These models are all labeled “Army of Fear” and include diverse examples of zombies including both 29 men and 19 women.

Virtually nothing is known about these zombies’ role in Red Dead Online or how they’ll fit into Rockstar’s Halloween plans. One notable detail is that all of the zombies appear to be wearing red clothes, as if they’re all a part of the same cult. They otherwise all have very similar faces, with different hair or clothes colors. In other words, players probably won’t be directly interacting with these zombies as NPCs. They would make for decent enemies to fight against in a hectic battle, though.

The one clue that the Red Dead Guides video mentions is an earlier leak of audio files with the label “Fear of Us.” The music in those files is quite spooky, so it seems likely to be used for a Halloween event or game mode. Perhaps a new mode or questline is named Army of Fear, perhaps it’s named Fear of Us, or perhaps it’s something entirely different.

While Red Dead Redemption fans would love something akin to the Undead Nightmare DLC, that seems unlikely. Undead Nightmare featured single-player missions with a lot of storytelling. The 50 datamined zombies implies something less authored. And story-heavy missions don’t lend themselves as well to Red Dead Online as opposed to Red Dead Redemption 2.

With Halloween less than a month and a half away, Red Dead Online players likely won’t have to wait long to find out exactly what Rockstar is planning. If the Halloween update itself isn’t dropped going into October, then dataminers will make up for it and continue finding pieces of whatever’s in the works.

Red Dead Online is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
