Gus Macmillian is a retired professional hunter introduced alongside Harriet Davenport when players visit the Welcome Center in Strawberry. In stark contrast to Harriet’s nature-loving personality, Gus talks about the opportunity to make money from hunting animals and says to keep in touch if players are interested. While there are no missions directly given by Gus, he does offer to trade some powerful items for the parts of certain animals.

Gus Macmillian’s Location

Players should note that Gus Macmillian doesn’t stay in one spot. Instead, he moves around through many locations on the map which are marked by a paw and dollar sign symbol. If players are still having issues locating him, the Gus tag within the map index can also be used to find his closest spot.

Hunting and Skinning Legendary Animals

The legendary animals that Gus wants are encountered during Harriet’s Naturalist Animal Missions. However, players need to track them down and eliminate some pesky poachers before they can claim the prize.

Press L3 + R3 on PS4, LS + RS on Xbox One, or the middle mouse button on PC to enable Eagle Eye for tracking animal trails. Animals can also be studied and tracked by observing them from far away and pressing the prompts that pop up on-screen. By studying the animals, players can learn what gun and ammo is needed to score a perfect kill. Using the proper weapon, aim for the animal’s head, heart, or other vital points that glow red to ensure the highest quality pelt. Move over to the recently killed animal, skin it, and bring the remains to Gus Macmillian’s current lodging.

Red Dead Online players should know that they can’t ruin a legendary animal’s pelt even if it takes several shots to bring the creature down. For this reason, it’s recommended to use the most powerful weapons including the recently-added Elephant Rifle to get the job done.

Unique Garments and Trinkets

Once a specific legendary animal pelt is brought to Gus, the corresponding garment and trinket will be unlocked. Note that this only opens up the items for purchase and players will still need enough money plus materials to get them. While the garments are purely cosmetics, each trinket will have a different beneficial effect.

Beaver Tooth Trinket ($795): Permanently slows all weapon degradation by 10% Buck Antler Trinket ($775): Players have a higher chance of receiving better quality pelts and skins from animals in perfect condition. Javelina Tusk Trinket ($500): Permanently increases horse bonding rate by 10% Ram Horn Trinket ($550): Picking Creeping Thyme, Oregano, and Wild Mint yields 2x more herbs. Snowy Egret Trinket ($800): Permanently decreases horse health and stamina core drain speed by 10%
