For the last week, a glitch in the Xbox One edition of Red Dead Online has prevented most NPCs and animals from spawning, resulting in haunting ghost towns, eerily empty paths, and the general vibe that something is amiss. Many players who’ve attempted to whistle for their horses are being met with no answer, and some carriages are spawning with horses but no riders. This is no Undead Nightmare DLC - something has just gone horribly wrong with Red Dead Online.
While towns have still retained their shopkeepers, the rest of the populace has disappeared for many players. The result is a completely still town from dawn to dusk, with perhaps the rare spawning of two horses in an empty carriage, trotting down paths with no rider to direct them. Animals can still be heard in the background, but there’s no in-game source behind the noises.
Rockstar Games hasn’t made an official statement regarding the empty Xbox One worlds, but it seems to be aware of the issue. In one support ticket, a customer service representative stated that the company has received multiple requests for the empty world glitch and is “working diligently to resolve the issue.” Given that Take-Two Interactive stock has dropped despite the strong sales of the western, it’s not a great time for the money-making online platform to run into issues.
There haven’t been mass reports on PlayStation, so Sony gamers appear to be safe from the spawning glitch that has created some melancholy-feeling empty worlds. Both sets of console users can expect the first major title update to arrive in the near future, which will implement a new law and bounty system, new weapons, and a new Free Roam event called Fool’s Gold. For Xbox One gamers, one will hope NPCs and animals will be making a re-appearance, too.
